CBC has abruptly halted individual bonus payments following severe criticism over multimillion-dollar payouts amid layoffs. The broadcaster’s decision to reconfigure employee compensation comes as a belated attempt to manage optics and restore credibility in an era when rewarding mediocrity seems to be out of fashion.
After a wave of criticism for handing out so-called "performance pay" to managers when it was considering layoffs, CBC/Radio-Canada's board of directors is ending the practice altogether after a third-party review, the corporation said Wednesday.
The move comes after the Canadian public broadcaster was criticized for paying out millions in bonuses after eliminating hundreds of jobs.
