A Canadian man, Ellis Kingsep, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his lengthy fraud scheme that diverted significant U.S. Social Security benefits. The case, which spanned decades, underscores the cross-border challenges in financial oversight and the relentless pursuit of justice in such elaborate scams.
Ellis Kingsep will have to repay $420,000 he stole in social security benefits while living legally in the U.S.
The United States Attorney's Office in Alaska says the scam began around 1995 and continued until 2023. In 2024, Ellis Kingsep, 77, was arrested.
