A Quebec Superior Court has ruled that the provincial government must cough up roughly $164 million as compensation for unlawfully detaining thousands for over 24 hours. The stern ruling comes amid criticism of “creative” accounting practices and has left officials scrambling for damage control.
The judgment awards $7,000 to each person who was detained for more than 24 hours without appearing before a judge between 2015 and 2020.
