Alberta’s political scene takes an unexpected twist as Speaker Nathan Cooper announces his resignation to become the province’s representative in Washington, D.C. This surprising career move, leaving colleagues and constituents bemused, underscores the often unpredictable and eyebrow-raising nature of political appointments down in Alberta.
Cooper said he will officially resign as Speaker on Monday, and an election of legislature members for a new Speaker will take place Tuesday
Nathan Cooper was elected Speaker of the Alberta legislature by fellow MLAs following the 2019 provincial election.
"I believe that we are at a critical time in our province and in our country with respect to how we interact with the world and with the United States of America," Cooper said the legislature on Wednesday
Nathan Cooper was first elected in Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills as a member of the Wildrose Party in 2015.
